Q. What do you mean by "supplements"?

When I discuss supplements with athletes/clients it is based on sound scientific evidence; thus providing a thorough understanding and knowledge of the correct use of supplementation. My philosophy is always food first, however it would be naive of me not to share proven or potential supplementsto enhance performance if safe, effective, legal and appropriate. My goal is to help educate you - debunk the MANY ineffective, unproven, harmful, and illegal substances per governing sport bodies (NCAA, IOC, NFL, USADA, etc). My recommendations are based on clean companies that can provide a certificate of analysis (COA) or participate in other independent laboratory testing (Informed Choice, NSF, Consumerlab). The term supplement can either excite or scare folks, thus it can mean different things to different people. The word supplement is a general term that can include:
  • Dietary - i.e. multi-vitamin/mineral, omega 3 fatty acids, single nutrient, whey protein
  • Ergogenic aids* (performance enhancing) - i.e. caffeine, creatine monohydrate, HMB, Beta-Alanine
  • Sports - i.e. carbohydrate/electrolyte drinks, energy gels/bars, sodium tablets
*An ergogenic aid can also be equipment used by an athlete such as shoes, wheels, swim suit, and oxygen tent.
